Domino Sugar Refinery, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
For over 150 years the Domino Sugar Refinery has been an iconic reminder of New York City’s industrial, cultural and architectural heritage. Situated next to the Williamsburg Bridge, the refinery has been a Brooklyn landmark since its completion in 1856. By 1870, it processed half of America’s sugar. Sadly, the refinery ceased operations in 2004, and since then the structures have dilapidated into disrepair. In 2007, three of the buildings were rightfully designated as New York City historic landmarks, but now a developer’s plans to gut the refinery into a high-end residential complex are on the verge of fruition. Help stop the rampant gentrification of Brooklyn and help preserve its historic integrity. The last thing New York needs is another Battery Park City
